We so enjoyed our field trip to Vulcan Park. It is a lovely place with a great view and loads of history and geography and geology!!! Birmingham became "the Magic City" after experiencing such rapid growth with the discovery of the three natural resources needed to make iron - coal, limestone and that precious "red" ore. The economy of Birmingham has been built on the iron industry and though demand has waned (and occasionally waxed!) over the years, the legacy remains and makes Birmingham a wealth of history with respect to the industrial revolution. Our family still misses Virginia with her abundant colonial, revolutionary and civil war history, but since we are in Alabama, we are enjoying taking advantage of another snapshot into the fascinating past here.
